Birch Bark Harvesting
Timing & Tree Selection
In the Greater Khingan summer (June-August), select healthy birch trees aged 15-30 years. This is when sap flow is active and bark peels most easily. Prioritize trees with straight trunks, smooth surfaces, and no visible scars to ensure bark quality.
Peeling Technique
Use a peeling knife to make a vertical cut along the trunk, controlling depth to penetrate only the outer bark. Carefully peel from the cut edge, using both hands—one to lift the bark edge, the other to assist separation with the knife. The goal is a single intact sheet without tearing.
Quality Standards
Quality birch bark should be smooth, uniformly thick (1-2mm), and white with a slight yellow tint. Critical principle: only take the outer dead bark; never damage the inner living layer (cambium), ensuring the tree can continue to grow. This reflects the Evenki ecological wisdom of "taking with restraint."
Preservation
Immediately wrap harvested bark in damp cloth to retain moisture and prevent curling and cracking. For transport, sandwich bark flat between two rigid boards and secure with rope. Begin processing as soon as possible after arriving at the workshop to prevent mold or brittleness from prolonged storage.
Bark Processing & Preparation
Cleaning
Gently wipe the bark surface with a soft cloth dampened with clean water to remove dust, moss, and loose debris. Use minimal water to avoid over-saturation and swelling. For stubborn attachments, use a soft-bristled brush. Never use chemical cleaners, which can damage bark fibers.
Flattening
Sandwich the moist bark between two flat boards and apply even pressure using heavy stones or a mechanical press for 24-48 hours. Replace absorbent paper during pressing to accelerate drying. Pressure must be evenly distributed to prevent localized over-compression and fiber breakage.
Drying
After flattening, air-dry the bark in a cool, ventilated area away from direct sunlight (UV rays cause brittleness and yellowing). Drying time varies with ambient humidity, typically 1-2 days. Turn occasionally to ensure both sides dry evenly.
Sanding
Lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (800-1000 grit) following the bark grain direction to remove burrs and small bumps. Check by running fingers over the surface—it should feel smooth as silk with no graininess. Wipe away sanding dust with a dry cloth.
Pattern Design & Composition
Sketching
Lightly sketch pattern outlines on the birch bark with a soft pencil (2B-4B). Avoid pencils that are too hard (scratch the bark) or too soft (blurry lines). Keep strokes light to allow for adjustments. For complex patterns, draft on paper first, then transfer to the bark.
Composition Principles
Traditional Evenki pyrography follows the "round heaven, square earth" compositional philosophy. The composition has three tiers: the upper celestial space (cloud motifs, aurora, sun symbols) representing spirits and natural forces; the middle living space (reindeer, figures, camps) depicting daily life and hunting scenes; the lower earthly space (mountain, water, grass motifs) embodying the land's foundation.
Three-Zone Layout
In practice, lightly draw two horizontal reference lines on the bark to divide it into three zones. The upper zone occupies ~1/4 of the height (celestial), the middle ~1/2 (main subject), and the lower ~1/4 (earthly). Place the main subject slightly above center in the middle zone for a clear visual focal point. Use decorative border bands for natural transitions between zones.
Spatial Expression
Inheritor Du Hui innovatively incorporated Western perspective techniques. Through line density variation (dense = deep, sparse = shallow) and tonal control (high-temperature deep burns for foreground, low-temperature light burns for background), a richly layered three-dimensional effect emerges on the two-dimensional bark surface. This represents a fusion of traditional craft and modern fine art.
Pyrography Technique Execution
Tool Preheating
Connect the pyrography pen to power and set the temperature based on desired effects (typically 300-500°C). Low heat (300-350°C) for light lines and distant views; medium heat (350-420°C) for main subjects; high heat (420-500°C) for dark emphasis and physical indentation. Allow 1-2 minutes for the tip to reach a stable temperature before starting.
Pen Handling
Hold the pyrography pen like a brush—grip the barrel lightly between thumb, index, and middle fingers, keeping the wrist suspended. Control movement with wrist power, not finger strength. Maintain a 45-60° angle between pen and surface. Keep breathing steady and body relaxed to avoid shaky lines. Beginners should practice straight and curved lines on scrap bark first.
Four Core Techniques
① Constant Speed — maintain uniform movement speed for smooth, even lines; speed changes cause uneven line width and tone. ② Temperature Gradation — adjust temperature in real time or use dwell time (longer contact = deeper burn) to achieve natural tonal transitions. ③ Layering — burn a light base first, let cool, then progressively darken selected areas, up to 3-5 layers. ④ Negative Space — leave highlight areas unburned or lightly burned, using the bark's natural white as the brightest "color."
Bas-relief Effect
The signature Dulaer Clan "bas-relief" effect requires applying heavier pressure in key areas (antlers, garment patterns, water ripples)—the pen tip must not only burn but also physically press into the bark surface by about 0.1-0.3mm. Under side lighting, these micro-indentations create subtle shadow variations, giving the flat pyrography a bas-relief-like three-dimensional texture.
Finishing & Protection
Removing Marks
Gently erase remaining pencil sketch lines with a soft eraser. Use non-abrasive erasers (white plastic erasers are ideal) to avoid wearing down the pyrography surface. Erase along the bark grain direction; lateral force can lift bark fibers. Pencil lines already covered by burn marks can be left as-is.
Surface Cleaning
Use a soft dry brush (wool or camel hair) to gently sweep away carbon dust particles and eraser debris produced during pyrography. Sweep from the center outward to prevent carbon dust from staining light-colored negative-space areas. For large works, follow with a slightly damp soft cloth wipe and allow to fully dry.
Protective Coating
Apply a small amount of natural beeswax or specialized bark wax with a clean soft cloth, spreading thinly in circular motions over the pyrography surface. The wax layer not only adds a warm luster but also effectively seals out moisture and dust, preventing bark warping and carbonized marks from oxidizing. After waxing, buff lightly with a dry cloth for a subtle matte finish.
Mounting & Storage
Choose mounting based on work size: small pieces suit natural wood frames (preserving the irregular bark edges for a more organic look); larger works work well as scroll mounts or displayed with the bark's natural form intact. Mounted works should avoid direct sunlight and humid environments (ideal humidity 45-55%) and can be preserved for decades. Dust periodically with a dry cloth; no additional maintenance is needed.
